Troubleshoot Microsoft Office add-ins for Workpapers CS

Scenario

When you open a Microsoft Excel workpaper, the application loads the Workpapers CS Add-In. This Add-In is needed to link the workpaper to the
Trial Balance
screen. You may get 1 of the following errors when you open an Excel workpaper.
  • #VALUE
    or
    #NAME
    in cells.
  • Workpapers CS menu doesn’t appear on the toolbar or ribbon bar in Microsoft Excel.
  • Documents don’t automatically return to the binder. This means that the status of the workpaper remains
    Checked Out
    when you close the document.

If the solutions don’t work your system has Trend Micro installed, you may need to contact for help.

Solution 1: If documents aren't returned to the binder

  1. Right-click the workpaper, then select 1 of the following:
    • Discard checkout
      if the document doesn’t include your recent changes.
    • Return to binder
      , if the document includes your recent changes.
  2. If you get an error message:
    1. Check if there is a copy of the workpaper at
      C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Local\Creative Solutions\Accounting CS\CheckedOutFiles
      note
      You may need to show hidden folders to view the AppData folder.
    2. If there's a copy, make sure that the document's permissions aren't
      Read-only
      .

Solution 2: Check your version of Office

  1. You'll need to run Office 32-bit. Refer to our Microsoft Guidelines for CS Professional Suite to check that we support the version of Microsoft Office you're running.
  2. Check that you have only one version of Microsoft Office installed.
  3. If you need to uninstall a version of Microsoft Office, refer to the to make sure you fully remove the installation.

Solution 3: Check you aren't running the application as an administrator

  1. Close the application.
  2. Right-click the application's icon on your Windows Desktop, then select
    Properties
    from the context menu.
  3. On the
    Compatibility
    tab, verify that the
    Run this program as an administrator
    checkbox is clear.

    If Windows User Account Control is turned off, Windows will run the application as an Administrator even if the
    Run this program as an administrator
    checkbox is cleared.
  4. Check that the executable application file is not run as administrator:
    1. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Creative Solutions\
      Workpapers CS
      or C:\Program Files\Creative Solutions\
      Workpapers CS
      .
    2. Right-click on
      WorkpapersCS.exe
      , then select
      Properties
      from the context menu.
    3. On the
      Compatibility
      tab, make sure the
      Run this program as an administrator
      checkbox is clear.

Solution 4: Check the Add-In is enabled

  1. In Microsoft Excel, select the
    File
    tab, then
    Options
    .
  2. Select
    Add-Ins
    .
  3. Select
    Excel Add-Ins
    from the
    Manage
    dropdown, then select
    Go
    .
  4. Make sure the Verify that the
    Cs.Accounting.Excel.Automation item
    checkbox is marked.
  5. Select
    OK
    .
  6. Repeat steps 1 and 2.
  7. Select
    COM Add-Ins
    from the
    Manage
    dropdown, then select
    Go
    .
  8. Make sure the
    CS.Accounting.OfficeIntegration.ExcelVstoAddin
    item checkbox is marked.
  9. Select
    OK
    .
  10. If the
    CS.Accounting.Excel.Automation
    and
    CS.Accounting.OfficeIntegration.ExcelVstoAddin
    items are not present:
    1. Select
      Disabled Items
      from the
      Manage
      dropdown list.
    2. Select the item, then
      Enable
      .

Solution 5: Review your Trusted Locations for Excel

  1. In Microsoft Excel or Word, select the
    File
    tab, then
    Options
    .
  2. Select
    Trust Center
    .
  3. Select
    Trust Center Settings
    .
  4. Select
    Trusted Locations
    .
  5. Select
    Add new location
    .
  6. Select
    Browse
    , go to C:\Program Files(x86)\Creative Solutions\
    Workpapers CS
    , then select
    OK
    .
  7. Mark the
    Subfolders of this location are also trusted
    checkbox.
  8. Select
    OK
    .

Solution 6: Turn off any Add-Ins not in use

  1. In Microsoft Word or Excel, select
    File
    , then
    Options
    .
  2. Select
    Add-Ins
    .
  3. Select
    COM Add-ins
    from the
    Manage
    dropdown list.
  4. Select
    Go
    .
  5. Clear the checkbox for any Add-Ins that you're not using.
  6. Select
    OK
    .

Solution 7: Reinstall the application

  1. On the workstation, go to
    Control Panel
    .
  2. Select
    Programs and Features
    .
  3. Select
    Workpapers CS
    , then
    Uninstall
    .
  4. Go to the WinCSI folder where you installed the application.
  5. Open the
    Workpapers CS
    folder inside the WinCSI folder.
  6. Inside the DESKTOP folder, double-click Setup.exe.

Solution 8: Reset user interface

If you're using Virtual Office, try resetting your user interface settings.
  1. Select
    Help
    then
    Reset User Interface Settings
    to delete your Client Settings file and reset the settings.
  2. Close and reopen the application.
Internal use only

Virtual Office/SaaS firms

Talk to the Web Resolver on duty and ask them to reset the user's profile.

Find and fix Add-In conflicts for local installation only

  1. Open the Start menu and then type "regedit" in the search to open the Registry Editor.
  2. Browse to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins
  3. Click on the first item in the Addins folder.
  4. Double-click LoadBehavior and then change the ValueData to 1 and click OK.
  5. Repeat steps 2-4 for the following locations as well.
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Software\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Software\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins
    note
    if the first item doesn’t have the LoadBehavior item, move down to the next item.
  6. Close the Registry Editor and reboot your computer.

The following folders in the Registry Editor should remain at a LoadBehavior value 3.

  • EngagementManager.ExcelAddIn
  • cab_addin.Connect

Error message: Unable to cast COM object

The customer may get the error message:
Unable to cast COM object of type 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel.ApplicationClass; to interface type 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excel._Application'. This operation failed because the QueryInterface call on the COM component for the interface with IID '{000208D5-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}' failed due to the following error: Library not registered. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8002801D (TYPE_E_LIBNOTREGISTERED)).
Delete the Registry key as described in the following blog post on the Microsoft website. ''
The number at the end of the key will vary depending on which version of Office the customer has installed. It's likely that you will need to delete the older version.

Error: not loaded. A runtime error occurred during loading of the Com add-in

  1. Verify that the Add-In is listed in the Registry Editor in the following locations:
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins
  2. Verify that the load behavior for the Add-In is set to
    3
    in both locations.
  3. If you can't find the Add-In in the Registry Editor:
    1. Uninstall and re-install Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime.
    2. Reboot the workstation.
    3. Rerun the Desktop Setup.

Document doesn't open in Excel or Word, but status changes to Checked Out

  1. Go to
    Control Panel
    , then
    Programs and Features
    .
  2. Check if there are remnants of an earlier version of Microsoft Office.
  3. If so, uninstall, then reboot.
  4. If you get the Workpapers error:
    The system can't find the file specified
    :
    1. Open Excel or Word.
      note
      Windows should automatically launch an installer that will do some configurations.
    2. Open the document from the Workpapers Dashboard.
Internal use only

Reset Excel settings

The following step to reset Excel settings has been reported to work, but should only be tried as a last resort.
  1. Enter
    regedit
    in Windows
    Search bar
    and select the
    Registry Editor
    app.
  2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\
  3. Rename the folder that corresponds to the version of Excel, for example rename 15.0 to 15.0.old.
  4. Open Excel outside Workpapers CS, then within Workpapers CS.

Trend Micro

important
These steps were provided by Trend Micro support. They fall outside the scope of Thomson Reuters Support and should only be provided to customers as a last resort.
  1. Confirm Agent Version for reference (should be at least 6.6.2412/14.1.1150).
  2. Back up the CPMCONFIG.INI file in the %ProgramFiles%\Trend Micro\Client Security Agent\Hosted Agent\CPM folder.
  3. Back up the OFCSCAN.INI file in the %ProgramFiles%\Trend Micro\Client Security Agent folder.
  4. Unload Agent > Monitor in Services.msc if it has stopped.
  5. Download and apply the fix SEG_66_Excel_AvoidExcelSaveIssue from box.
  6. Restart the workstation.
  7. Check if the files below have the AvoidExcelSaveIssue=0:
    1. C:\Program Files (x86)\Trend Micro\Client Server Security Agent\HostedAgent\CPM\CpmConfig.ini [Global Setting]
    2. C:\Program Files (x86)\Trend Micro\Client Server Security Agent\Ofcscan.ini [Global Setting]
  8. Check if the problem is solved.

ADO 1787136, Workpapers CS automation Add-In stays inactive

If the Workpapers CS automation Add-In remains inactive after the possible solutions in this help topic, ask the customer to have their IT professional to look at the User Account Control (UAC) setting for Accounting CS or Workpapers CS. If it is
